~ THERE IS BEAUTY IN UNCOMMON PLACES ~
We are a family of lepidoptera enthusiasts! My husband introduced me to lepidoptera. Our family has been involved in Entomology for over 60 years and more if you add it all together. There is always so much to learn! We both enjoy raising, mounting and releasing butterflies and moths. A lot of people think it is strange because they don’t understand it. It is wonderful when you can preserve a creature’s beauty.
ABOUT THE BUTTERFLIES:
Butterfly farms help countries and their people make revenue instead of deforestation practices. They are raised in butterfly aviaries all over the world.
To keep things running females are brought in from the wild to lay their eggs. This way the female and her eggs are protected from disease, predators and parasites. One female can lay thousands of eggs. In the wild only a handful will survive into adulthood. In captivity nearly 100% will survive. Once the butterflies reach adulthood many are released into the wild to increase butterfly populations.
The remaining butterflies are kept in butterfly houses for the remainder of their lives, which is only a week or so in most cases. The money supplied to the butterfly houses helps keep their operations running, which in turn saves the native species of insects and plants from becoming extinct or endangered.
Many of my butterflies originate from butterfly farms from around the world. My information comes from over 65 years of lepidoptera study in my family and personal interaction with suppliers all over the world. I feel confident in their practices and comforted in the fact that this is helping so many impoverished communities around the world.
