Issued weekly during the Opera Season and fortnightly in the Spring and Fall by
THE METROPOLITAN OPERA GUILD 654 MADISON AVENUE, NEW YORK, N. Y.
THIS WEEK: the cover painting, by Rembrandt, fixes the climacticmoment in the story of Samson and Delilah and is reproduced by courtesy of the Berlin Museum of Art. Saint-Saens' opera on the subject has often been called an oratorio, for reasons discussed by Ronald Eyer, editor of Musical America. The composer himself sits for a 'biographical sketch by Gisa Schulz, while Herbert Graf analyzes modern trends in operatic staging on the basis of his recent studies in Europe and America on a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation. Philip L. Miller of the New York Public Library interviews Margarete Matzenauer; other interviews focus on opera-lover Gene Tunney, Metropolitan choreographer Zachary Solov and Mario Del Monaco, who 'broadcasts his first Samson. Dalila's vocal wiles are appraised by William Ashbrook, a veteran contributor.
