Pak
Mei Kung Fu is one of the most aggressive and explosive Chinese martial arts. Pak
Mei (also known as Bak Mei and in Mandarin Bai Mei) is a Kung Fu system created
by a Taoist monk of the same name. The date generally given for the formation
of the style is 1647, just after the creation of the Qing Dynasty (1644). Bak
Mei is said to have sported white hair on his brow but it may be, as was common
in China, that the name refers to a distinctive white head band. Pak Mei (White
Eyebrow) remains a fairly underexposed style of kung fu. Pak
Mei Kung Fu (white Eyebrow), was the
first English-language book on the style. You get a brief history of Pak Mei
and its Great Grandmaster Cheung Lai Chun (who instructed this book's author,
H.B. Un), one form and a few self-defense applications. The history is
fascinating, the applications are basic but mostly practical, and the form is
impossible to learn from the book. Some of the individual movements are worth
studying because they demonstrate how Pak Mei synthesizes "hard"
techniques from other Southern Chinese styles like Hung Gar and Phoenix Eye
with "soft" techniques which resemble the internal styles, but the
transition between movements is not conveyed at all in the photographs
