COVER: DIET CRAZES.
TOP OF THE WEEK:
COVER: DIET CRAZES: There's a twinge of anxiety with every forkful when America sits down to dinner these days: at least 70 million citizens are overweight, and most of the rest are worried about diet J problems ranging from high blood pressure to cancer. Exploiting these fears, promoters of fad diets flood the best-seller lists and peddle nostrums ranging from bran cereal to liquid protein. Medicine editor Matt Clark examines the latest nutritional crazes and finds that some are sensible, some are downright dangerous and the best of them call for an exasperating amount of self-discipline. DISCO KING: Not since Sylvester Stallone has a young actor leaped so dramatically to movie stardom as JOHN TRAVOLTA. A teen idol as Vinnie Barbarino in TV's "Welcome Back, Kotter," Travolta is about to hit the screen as a flashy disco dancer in "Saturday Night Fever," a movie about the frustrations of the disco life in a lower-middle-class section of Brooklyn. David Ansen appraises the movie and Travolta's electrifying performance. Off-screen, Maureen Orth finds the 23-year-old actor is just as unspoiled and serious-minded as the boy next door.
KID STUFF: With Christmas looming, there's an unseasonable shortage of some of the most popular toys (page 58). But the usual deluge of juvenile books has hit the stalls, and Senior Editor Charles Michener turns up some gems in the literary kiddie litter (page 81).
SADAT'S TALKS: Egypt and Israel meet in Cairo this week for a conference that could sharply alter the old Arab-Israeli blood feud. For Anwar Sadat, said an Egyptian diplomat on the eve of the talks, "It's peace or' nothing.
BOKASSA I: Africa had a brand new Emperor last week--Bokassa I of the Central African Empire (left). Newsweek's Loren Jenkins flew to Bangui, capital of the new empire, for the coronation and found it a rollicking affair. Although his country is dirt-poor, Bokassa, a former soldier in the French Army, spent $25 million to imitate the coronation of his idol, Napoleon. Kings, presidents and the Pope spurned his invitations. But Bokassa donned a 30-foot train of red velvet trimmed with gold and ermine. Then he put a $2.5 million, gemencrusted crown on his own head and the party was on.
