Brand new factory sealed Artisan Entertainment Special Edition dvd that is Out Of Print (OOP). Loaded with notable features it also has storyboard selections, trailers, TV spots and production notes.
Following the mysterious suicide of elderly book collector Andrew Telfer, unscrupulous book dealer Dean Corso (Johnny Depp) is contacted by Boris Balkan (Frank Langellla), an immensely wealthy bibliophile and influential publisher who collects extremely rare and antique books, all featuring (as he says) "the same protaganist--the Devil."
The day before Telfer's suicide, Balkan purchased Telfer's copy of a rare 17th-century book (published in 1666) whose author's muse was reputedly Satan himself, titled DE UMBRARUM REGNI NOVEM PORTIS, or "the Nine Gates of the Kingdom of Shadows"--a book so rare, in fact, that there are only three extant copies in the world. The book contains a series of nine Tarot-like engravings which, when decoded and their interpretations properly spoken, purportedly will give the acolyte the power to conjure Satan himself.
Balkan wants Corso's detective services because he believes the copy that he bought from Telfer may be a forgery. This complication--that there are known variants in the engravings in the three copies and that Balkan believes that only one set of them, the nine signed "LCF" (Lucifer)?, is authentic--propels Corso on a journey to Portugal and France in the search for the other two books.
In the course of his journey, Corso finds out that he is being followed by Telfer's sexy widow (Lena Olin) for mysterious reasons, and also is being trailed and watched by a strange but lovely woman with green eyes (Emmanuelle Seigner), who eventually befriends him. Corso is drawn into the intrigue in which he finds himself, becoming entangled with a group of Satanists, and finally a deadly adversary that he himself finds impossible to resist.
