Item description

This depiction of a typical Puerto Rican hut shows the conditions of the Taina in the early twentieth century as Puerto Rico became an American Territory following the conclusion of the Spanish-American War in 1898. After centuries of colonial rule by Spain, Puerto Rico became a central hub for trade between the Americas, the Caribbean, and Europe throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and an important military center after the Spanish-American War. The early twentieth century also marked a period of significant growth and transformation on the island as technological advances made leaps and bounds following the industrial revolution. The photograph was produced by the Detroit Publishing Company in 1903 and features a distinctive aesthetic enhanced by the minimal black and white tones. The Conclusion of the Spanish-American War in 1898 marked another period of transformation for the island, and emerging economies in tourism would become essential for Puerto Rico in the twentieth century. The unique aesthetic immediately transports the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present. The Taina peoples were first encountered by Columbus in 1492 and were found throughout the Caribbean. These traditional dwellings made use of local resources, but they were quickly being replaced by the early twentieth century with contemporary architecture inspired by European and American styles. This is an authentic piece of historical photography that illustrates the evolution and transformation of the island from the late nineteenth century into the twenty and twenty-first century with a signature style.
