Located in the central valley of California, Stockton has a rich history and has remained an essential hub for the agricultural industry since it was first established in 1849. Stockton's location on the San Joaquin River allowed city leaders to build a seaport that offered access to the southern gold mines, which created a population boom during the California Gold Rush. Stockton was a gateway to the gold mines, and numerous outfitters were established that sold goods to eager prospectors from across America and Europe looking to make fortunes in the hills of central California.
By the time of this publication in 1895, the city had grown considerably and continued to experience a period of significant prosperity along with the rest of the United States during the so-called Gilded Age. Access had also expanded with the establishment of numerous rail lines across the American West, which attracted immigrants looking for land to create farms and ranches. The San Joaquin Valley is considered some of the most fertile agricultural land in the United States. Stockton's proximity to San Francisco and Sacramento continued to draw residents to the region throughout the eighteenth century.
Bird's eye perspectives were widely popular during the eighteenth and early parts of the twentieth century and feature a unique style and distinctive aesthetic that immediately transport the viewer back in time, creating a connection between the past and present. Panoramic maps were used as marketing materials to entice residents and merchants alike by highlighting economic opportunities.
