Item description

Published in 1892 by the prominent and prolific Augustus Koch, this bird's eye perspective of Austin, TX depicts the city in a period of significant transition and growth as it neared the turn of the century. Koch's career spanned thirty years, and his engravings were among the most popular of the era, known for their intricate details and distinctive style. Koch produced more than one hundred illustrations and traveled extensively throughout the United States, creating these works. One of only three cities ever depicted twice by Koch, this is a unique piece of work within his canon. Reconstruction following the conclusion of the Civil War had transformed the city, and construction of The University of Texas had begun in 1882; and the city had been designated the capital of Texas in 1872 with construction of the State Capital starting in 1888. This bird's eye perspective's unique aesthetic immediately transforms the viewer back in time. Construction of the Austin Dam on the Colorado River began in 1893, designed to lure manufacturers and businesses by promising affordable hydroelectric energy. The Dam would later be featured on the cover of Scientific American. Ultimately the Dam would collapse after heavy spring rains in 1900. The late nineteenth century saw the city transforming from wagon pulled carriages to electric streetcars and streetlights and hurtling towards the twentieth century. This distinctive illustration shows Austin after it had nearly doubled inside in the late nineteenth century and is a genuine piece of American cartographical history. Our ready-to-hang wall art are printed and framed in the USA using the highest quality materials with professional craftsmanship. This beautiful artwork is a perfect addition to your themed decor.
