They were the original works of Jacques Ignace Hittorff and were completed in 1840 during the reign of King Louis-Philippe. The Fountain of the Rivers is dedicated to the Rhone and Rhine and displays figures of industry, harvesting flowers and crops and river navigation. The Fountain of the Seas, on the other side of the plaza, is devoted to the Atlantic and Mediterranean with accompanying figures - astronomy, commerce harvesting of coral, pearls and fish and navigation. Also seen is the Luxor Obelisk. This particular Obelisk dates back over 3,300 years and was brought to Paris from Egypt in 1833. It is made of red granite, it has hieroglyphics from the Egyptians that depict the rule of Ramses II and Ramses III. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FRANK WARREN MARSHALL (1866-1930) Frank Marshall, was a Providence, Rhode Island-born painter, illustrator, and teacher, was known as โ€œthe Dean of Rhode Island Illustrators.โ€ He studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and the Academie Julian in Paris.
