ROGER DENNIS: OLD LYME IMPRESSIONIST by Edward Feit. Old Lyme, Connecticut, was once an active community of
Impressionist painters. Roger Dennis, now in his mid-eighties, knew and worked with many of the great artists of that
town. He recalls those golden days and describes his own approach to oil painting in this article.
JEFFREY CARR by Eunice Agar. The challenge this young painter has established for himself is to present a standard
repertoire of still-life objects in a way that is fresh and personal.
BATIK COMES OF AGE: TWO CALIFORNIA ARTISTS TAKE DYE PAINTING BEYOND CRAFT by Karen Haber. Carol Takaki and
Marty Noble offer step-by-step demonstrations of how they create realistic paintings using traditional batik materials on
fabric.
THE WATERCOLOR PAGE: JOAN ASHLEY ROTHERMEL This artist from Sandusky, Ohio, explains her approach to watercolor
painting.
A CONVERSATION WITH MICHAEL GRAVES by Charles Movalli. This Massachusetts artist explains how he makes his small oil

GIB NEAL by Betsy Schein Goldman. Nebraska artist Gib Neal has achieved great success with the watercolor paintings he
creates primarily with the use of an airbrush. He describes and illustrates his techniques in this article.
PEN INK: LARRY JOHNSON by M. Stephen Doherty. California artist and teacher Larry Johnson, whose pen-and-ink
drawing was included in the Golden Anniversary National Art Exhibition sponsored by the magazine, describes his use of
technical pens for drawing and offers a step-by-step demonstration.
THE CHALLENGE OF ANIMAL PORTRAITURE by Pamela Swanson. This Chicago artist and teacher, who has written two
previous articles on painting and drawing techniques, now describes her approach to commissioned portaits of animals. She

FRED JONES by Mark B. Stegmaier. Working with a variety of drawing materials, this Illinois artist focuses on the power of
nature and the ways in which farmers shape vast portions of the landscape.
