Additional Information
When he joined the Brooklyn Dodgers in the position of first baseman in 1947, Jackie Robinson broke the segregation of professional baseball and became the first Black American to play professionally in the Major Leagues, effectively signaling a cultural shift that would inspire the nation's Civil Rights movement, which had gained significant achievements and would continue to push the desegregation of the United States during the 1950s. Robinson was born in Cairo, Georgia, though raised in Pasadena, California, where he would go on to become a four-sport athlete at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he became a star football player before being drafted into military service during World War II.
Robinson won Rookie of the Year in 1947, played in the All-Star Game for six consecutive seasons, and was awarded the National League Most Valuable Player Award in 1949. Robinson also played in six World Series and helped bring home the pennant for the Dodgers in 1955. Robinson's iconic number 42 was retired in 1997 by the Major League Baseball Association, the first player in any professional sport to be honored with this acknowledgment. The MLB also created Jackie Robinson Day in 2004, where every player in the league wears the number 42 to honor Robinson's legacy.
This iconic photograph captures Robinson in the early portion of his career and bears a distinctive aesthetic that immediately transports the viewer back in time. This is an authentic piece of American baseball history.
