Additional Information Pictured here at the height of his career, this photograph of Babe Ruth remains one of the most enduring images of the most iconic American baseball players of the twentieth century. By 1922, Ruth's career and legacy had been cemented, and he had become one of the most famous baseball players since his debut with the Boston Red Sox in 1914. However, he had since been traded to the New York Yankees, where his skill as a batter had been recognized, which stood in stark contrast to his position as a pitcher during his time with the Red Sox. Ruth signed with the Yankees in 1920 and would play for the iconic team until 1934, when he played over 2000 games, broke numerous batting records, and only appeared on the mound five times, of which he won all five. However, he did suffer an injury from batting in his initial year in 1920. During this period, Ruth's star continued to rise as his ability to hit home runs garnered favor from his fans' home base in New York and frustration from their opponents during away games. A year after this picture was taken, the Yankees bid farewell to the Polo Grounds, their historic home, and moved to the iconic Yankee Stadium. It was in this new stadium that Ruth would make history by hitting his first home run in 1923. This photo captures Ruth in one of the most iconic periods of his career, a time that immediately transports the viewer back in time and signifies a significant milestone in both Ruth's career and the Yankees' history.
