Vintage Silver Mantilla Victorian Style Hair Comb Etched Pierced Stars Intricate Open Cut Design Engraved Handcrafted Decorative Floral Vine Etchings Lady Woman 7 Prong Plated Headpiece Smaller Size 4 1/4 inches by 3 3/4 inches Spanish Peineta Jewelry Accessory Bun Holder Slide Grip Pick Fork Seven Tines Formal Wedding Prom Ballroom Dance This is a stunning vintage decorative silver plate hair comb or ornament made to be worn by a woman with long hair. It is not signed or hallmarked and I am pretty sure that this silver toned comb is silver plated over metal, not sterling silver. It is a small version of the large Peineta or Mantilla comb that was worn with traditional Spanish dress or costumes. The Mantilla combs were very common and popular in the Victorian Era largely due to the opera “Carmen”, which debuted in 1875. This comb has seven prongs for an easy grip in the hair and will look gorgeous when worn in the back, stuck into an elaborate hairstyle for a wedding or for a ballroom dancer doing a Flamenco dance. I did add a couple of small inserted pictures that show what this style will look like when worn in the hair. The one sticking in the bun is similar in design shape to this one. This hairpiece has a lovely surface engraving or etched floral vine pattern with open cut five pointed stars on each side. It has a scalloped edge top design. It measures approximately 3 inches across at the widest point and 4 inches tall from the top to the bottom of the prongs. I do not know when or where this was made, it has been in the family a long time. This hair comb is in great vintage condition as you can see by the enlarged photographs. I have not polished it, it looks as though there is a protective coating over the plating to keep it shiny. Depending on your own taste, I will leave any polishing up to you; you can keep it in the same condition with its original patina or polish it. There are some fine surface scratches, but they don’t really show without the magnification. The piece looks nice and shiny, some slight finish change on the back. Please look at the photos as they are part of the description and show the details better than I can describe. This will be perfect for a wedding, prom, or any formal occasion. It would look lovely adorning the back of the hair, placed above a large bun. It would also be a great addition to any collection of vintage hair accessories.
