Livermore was a paid employee for the U.S. Sanitary Commission Chicago branch. The U.S. Sanitary Commission was a U.S. government agency formed in 1861 to coordinate women's effort in war relief through hospital work and fundraising. As an inspector for the Sanitary Commission, Livermore visited hospitals throughout Illinois and the nation.
