Item description
THE DEVIL:
A Play
by Ferenc Molnar
Adapted by Oliver Herford
New York: Mitchell Kennerley, (1908).
First edition.
Contains publisher's "MK" circled seal to the title page and "copyright 1908 by Henry W. Savage" statement to the copyright page.
Five photo-play-scene illustrations on striking black-and-white semi-glossy plates.
"As originally produced by Henry W. Savage at Hartford, July 6, 1908".
Staged by Robert Milton with the assistance of Julius Herzka, Director-General of the Volks-Theatre.
This original play production starred Edwin Stevens as the Devil, with Marguerite Snow, Marion Lorne, Paul McAllister, Dorothy Dorr, and Frank Monroe.
The Hartford premiere was a great success, and the play launched a Broadway premiere also in 1908, starring George Arliss, who later played the same role in three different film versions, the second debuted co-star Fredric March.
Many of Molnar's plays were adapted to film, the two most famous being THE DEVIL, and LILIOM--the film version directed by Fritz Lang starring Charles Boyer, and was later adapted to the Rogers and Hammerstein musical CAROUSEL.
Well-preserved.
White color of spine titles has flecked off, a hairline crack barely starting to quite sturdy front inner hinge, scholar and play critic Eleazer Lecky's name-plate to inside front cover, lower corner tips lightly bumped, else very good plus in ribbed red linen with white embossed titles and rules to the front cover, and with the visual appearance of blind embossed titles to the spine; no dust jacket.
An historically important play and significant literary work.
Octavo; 167 pages.
