Hannah More; or; Life in Hall and Cottage. by Mrs. Helen C. Knight New York: American Tract Society, 1862. Assumed first edition. A biography on the life of British religious writer and philantropist Hannah More (1745-1833) by American writer Helen Caroline Cross Knight (1814-1906). She was also a great believer in social reform, especially in the area of education. Continuing a trend set by her parents, More helped found twelve schools to help educate disadvantaged children in England. She was also a prolific writer of pamphlets and books on moral instruction. Some of her writings include Considerations on Religion and Public Education, The Fatal Falsehood, Practical Piety, and Essays on Various Subjects, Principally Designed for Young Ladies. Deep bluish-green cloth boards with gilt titles to front and spine. Chocolate brown endpapers. Long octavo; size is 4-5/8" by 7-5/8". One engraving as frontispiece.
