Item description
This is an ANTIQUE, Marked "Van Buskirk's Sozodont For The Teeth Embossed Small Clear Glass Medicine Oral Hygience Product Bottle" made in the 1890s. Displayed as part of my friend's mother's Glass Medicine Bottle Collection through 2006, it was packed away when she moved her mom to an assisted living facility. With a bit of age appropriate dirt, it is in overall EXCELLENT Condition but could use a gentle cleaning. With NO odors, chips, cracks or other damage, it comes from a smoke-free, pet-free home. Standing approximately 2 1/2 inches tall, it measures approximately 3/4ths of an inch wide and approximately 5/8ths of an inch deep, the Original Cork is long gone; the front side is Marked "For The Teeth" with both side panels Marked "Sozodont".
With an EYE-CATCHING shape, the Bottle has BEAUTIFULLY HANDSOME lines. Sure to clean up nicely, it is full of antique CHARM.
Sozodont was a popular brand of oral hygiene product from the mid-19th century to the early-20th century. Created in 1859 by druggist Roswell van Buskirk, its name hails from the Greek sozo, meaning "to save" and dontia, meaning "teeth". Known as Van Buskirk's Fragrant Sozodont, or Van Buskirk's Fragrant and Antiseptic Sozodont, the product was dispensed from a glass bottle through a metal sprinkler and, as illustrated advertisements show, could be applied to the teeth using a toothbrush. The product made strong use of advertising as a marketing tool and by the late nineteenth century was an established household word. Sozodont fell out of favor with consumers in the early20th century amid concerns about side effects of its usage.
