PREVIEW:
Lord Baden-Powell gave Scouting to the world as the gift of his genius. When he died in 1941, countless letters came to his widow saying in many different ways, "We loved him and we will miss him." Yet the words I found most touching were those she herself had written in her diary some moments after his death. She said, "He looked so sweet in death as he was in life--utterly, utterly noble and dear and good and wonderful, great and faultless." This remarkable woman, now 81, is the subject of our cover and of the story "Scouting's Great Lady." It was written by William Harrison Fetridge, Vice President of the BSA, and long-time friend of Lady Baden-Powell. - - . Executive Editor Ted Holstein has a rare knack for pumping life into limp stories and scraping the barnacles off of others. But his big joy comes when he uncorks a story idea with that certain something that makes it well worth handing on to our readers. This month he's come up with "Explorers on the Go" that tells of how young men become the leaders of super Emergency Service Post 21 in Wauwatosa, Wis. - . . I visited Boston 1 Council not long ago and did some pleasant listening as four Scouters--two of them veterans, two relative newcomers--spoke up about how Scouting is keeping pace with the times. My trusty tape recorder caught their words on the wing and the results appear in "Dialogue: Boy Scouting." ... Labor and Scouting are working partners. So says Joel Gay who points out the great boost that organized labor has given us via time, manpower and money. The story's on page 30 ...... What does student writing tell us?" Author Robert Holland, who is preparing a book on student magazines, reminds us that our sons and daughters are searching for answers to life's big questions and that we'd best tune in on them. - - - And since we're tuning our ear horns in on our youngsters, they might pipe in on us, too. Bergen Evans, a man of wit and learning, has some kind words for us rusty old codgers over thirty. His thoughts are on page 46.
