In the creepy opener, an off-screen female narrator introduces the bizarre history behind East Willard, a dying snowy hamlet where the Butler estate, formerly a mental institution, became the springboard for an inexplicable burning death. This Christmas, a variety of people have descended upon the Butler estate, including middle-aged lawyer John Carter (Patrick O'Neal) and his mistress. The pair decide to spend the night in the Butler house after a meeting with the town locals, including John Carradine in a quirky extended cameo. An escapee from nearby asylum infiltrates the Butler house and begins a spate of menacing whispered phone calls, puncuated by the occasional gory axe murder. The Butler heir, Jeffrey, enlists the aid of touchy Diane (Mary Woronov), the mayor's daughter, to uncover the horrifying history behind the desolate house, culminating in an extended, monochromatic, blood-spattered flashback.
