Item description
LARGE - NUDE FLAPPER ACRYLIC LUCITE SCULPTURE
ONE OF A KIND 1960's ON BLACK WALNUT BASE?
This - one of a kind -PROTOTYPE- acrylic (lucite) sculpture was purchased from "ACRYLICA" (Foundry for fine Lucite Sculptures) located on 26th Street Manhattan, New York 10001 when they closed in 1970, by Plexi-Craft (Long Island City) and from Plexicraft by the seller.
Acrylica was known to contract with known Sculpturers i.e. Margit Malmstrom (Chelsea School of Fine Art, NYC) to produce high quality limited edition (300 or less) Lucite sculptures.
This elegant nude flapper with her head thrown back (Tallulah Bankhead, style), is WITHOUT question a prototype.
It was the first trial example right out of the mold made from the original clay figure. The clay original is lost to history. As such it has mold marks, seam lines, surface irregularities, and imperfections which would be removed in the finishing process. Kind of like an artist's study before the final image. Basically a rough not finished work of art.
Hence, this pre-production work has a lot of character and history. This all adds to its appeal!!!
The surface is satin and frosted If it is Illuminated on a pedestal from below or behind, truly STUNNING!!!
Though unsigned its uniqueness ads value. Most likely the creation of a known sculptor.
There is an unfinished mold pontil on the base. Included is a rough black urethane coated walnut kiln dried base. Measuring 6"x 6"x 2" with 4 heavy felt Shepherd pads on bottom.
A true statement piece for any art collector at an entry level price. A ONE OF A KIND PIECE. No doubt someone with expertise may recognize the sculptor of this treasure. A knock out piece for your MCM decor.
DIMENSION:
HEIGHT: 20" (with base 22")
WIDTH 6"
DEPTH 6"
WEIGHT. 10LBS 15.4OZ.
Won't last.
NOTE: PROVENANCE ON ACRYLICA was provided to the seller by one of ACRYLICA'S contracted renown Sculpturers.
This piece may contain the usual production elements such as feathering, straw marks, embedded sand, ash, or air bubbles. These are normal conditions in the production process and do not detract from the beauty of the piece. In fact, it adds a uniqueness to each piece.
