A BIT OF ABLE HISTORY OF ADULT BASIC LITERACY EDUCATION (ABLE)

Adult Basic Literacy Education (ABLE) was established in 1985 with the goal of promoting literacy in Jefferson City, MO and the surrounding communities.

At that time, state and federal sources revealed significant numbers of functionally illiterate individuals in the area

as well as increasing numbers of high school dropouts.

To address this issue, ABLE began recruiting and training

volunteers to tutor and offering classes to help adults over the age of 16 and not currently enrolled in school to improve their reading ability.

In 1989, ABLE became a United Way Agency.
