When photographer Alfred Wertheimer accepted the free-lance assignment from RCA in 1956, he had never heard of the young musician he was assigned to photograph.  His name was Elvis Presley.  Though there are hundreds of images of Elvis after he bacame a star, Wertheimer preserved for posterity Elvis' earlier life.  For a few days in 1956 Wertheimer photographed a determined young man on the verge of becoming "The King".

Alfred Wertheimer is a New York-based photographer, best known for his photographs of Elvis taken in 1956. His work has appeared in publications including LIFE, Paris Match and Rolling Stone. LightBox previously featured Wertheimer's photographs of Nina Simone.
