Ian McCulloch ~ Candleland
'Ian McCulloch's first solo LP represents his most accomplished work since the 1984 Echo and the Bunnymen' masterpiece Ocean Rain; haunted by the recent deaths of the singer's father as well as Bunnymen drummer Pete DeFreitas, Candleland is a poignant yet ultimately triumphant album which probes not only themes of loss but also rebirth. Atmospherically produced by Ray Shulman, tracks like "The Flickering Wall" and "Proud to Fall" tread familiar musical territory, yet are delivered with a renewed sense of purpose; McCulloch's expressive vocals and impassioned lyrics recall past glories, but also tap newfound reserves of maturity and introspection. Equally compelling are the record's more unexpected departures, which include the waltz-like "I Know You Well," the New Order-esque "Faith and Healing," and the glistening title track, a fairytale music box with backing vocals courtesy of Cocteau Twins Elizabeth Fraser. A stunning and unexpected return to form...'

James ~ Self-Titled
'With Gold Mother becoming an unqualified smash in the UK, the record was later issued in the US as this self-titled 1991 release. The song that earned them U.K. commercial clout (and a spot on college rock play lists) was the infectious "Sit Down," with its hypnotic, shuffling melody and heart-on-its-sleeve lyrics. With the same effortless craftsmanship of earlier releases (and a newly revamped lineup that had left them a septet), James also contains the dense, droning "Come Home" and the percussive, wry "How Was It for You," both of which also (and deservedly) found favor with listeners. In keeping with prior releases, the lyrics are a mixture of disaffected outsider observations, tempered with optimism, delivered with warmth and earnestness by frontman Tim Booth. With winning melodies and a dose of humor (the take on televangelists "God Only Knows"), James is a record that earned the group new fans and is well-worth checking out for those who might be new to them...'

finally...
The Farm ~ Spartacus (Bonus Tracks version)
'The Farm's debut album, Spartacus, is one of the more confusing by-products of the entire 'Baggy' phenomenon, containing all of its rolling, neo-psychedelic grooves and blissfully colorful pop hooks, yet the band, strangely, fail to capture much of its charm, character, or substance. Still, the Farm managed to turn out a couple of undeniably endearing singles with "Groovy Train" and "All Together Now," both rich in dance-club rhythms, and both allied to catchy pop hooks. As an artifact of the era, for fans of idiosyncratic and regional UK fads, this is fascinating, since it demonstrates how far the over the top the entire 'Madchester' phenomenon went, even more so as seen from a distance of some 30 years...'
