FRANK CHILTON (1904-1973)
Charles Frank Chilton was born in Texas in the 1904, and lived most of his life in Phoenix, Arizona. He spent his later years in Bellflower, California. A true Plein Air artist, Frank loved to paint landscapes on-site. He is best known for desert and forest landscapes subjects painted in oil on canvas. With his earlier works he signed "CF Chilton" or "Charles Frank Chilton", but after a short time he used "Frank Chilton" almost exclusively.

He was a painter of the deserts in and around Phoenix, Arizona. He was "Desert Artist" of the year in the 1950's and has hundreds of paintings in private collections and galleries around the U.S. Frank Chilton, brother to Arthur came to Arizona from Chilton, Texas shortly after the turn of the century. Frank was a bachelor, but had a large extended family, many of whom were artists including his brother Arthur. Later, Arthur's daughter, Maoma Chilton Cadwell excelled as an artist, and the tradition carried on through her children, Dan and Carol Cadwell. They are prolific artists themselves, today living in Boise, Idaho. Frank was an excellent art teacher, and the best of the clan were often guided under his tutelage.
He lived in a home covered in paintings. He drove a Jeep, often wore a big Canvas hat and desert boots. He loved to travel to the deserts, and between Arizona and California, there was much to paint.

Later in life he moved to Bellflower, California. Frank won accolades as a college Art teacher in nearby Bell, California. As his popularity grew his work could be seen all over downtown Bellflower, through the 1950s and 60s. In his later years, even with failing health Frank continued to produce art, even trying his hand at seascapes and portraits.
