EMERGING ARTISTS: For the fifth year, the editors of American Artist have selected four promising artists to be profiled in this annual showcase article. These artists, chosen from dozens nominated by contributing editors, art teachers, and artists from around the country, describe how they are developing their own unique styles while advancing their careers as artists.

JAMES D. BUTLER: PAINTINGS AND DRAWINGS FROM THE HEARTLAND by Betsy Schein Goldman. Illinois artist James D. Butler, whose paintings, drawings, and prints have been included in several major exhibitions, describes how he creates his still-life and landscape oils depicting the Midwest.

DIRECT PAINTING WITH PASTELS by Pamela Swanson. This Illinois artist presents a stepby-step demonstration of her direct approach to painting with pastels. Pastels permit Swanson to rework images, make decisions while she paints, and work at her own pace.

EDWARD BRODNEY: PAINTING WITH A MATURE BUT YOUTHFUL SPIRIT by Edward Feit. After 30 years of successfully running an art gallery, Brodney returned to making his own paintings with a new awareness and enthusiasm. Here, he talks about the revival of his art career and his approach to oil painting.

THE WATERCOLOR PAGE: JOSEPH M. ORR. Orr describes his approach to painting in watercolor while out in the Arizona deserts.

PATRICIA NIX: ART AS A COLLAGE OF LIFE EXPERIENCES by Paul Braucher. Patricia Nix's New York City studio-apartment is as much a collage of her life experiences as are the collages she creates. The author presents a close-up look at her studio and her work.

JAMES COUPER by Marcia Corbino. In this article, Couper reveals his unusual technique of using computer-generated projections of his photographs as the underpainting for his paintings of the Florida Everglades.
