CAB Comment––Many associate the name “Mr. Moto” with the popular 1930s film series starring Peter Lorre. Although most of the films were only loosely based on the books, the Moto spy novels were far better than mere pulp fiction. The main reason for this is that the author was John Phillips Marquand, a skillful writer who would soon win a Pulitzer Prize for his 1938 novel “The Late George Apley”. If you haven’t seen the Mr. Moto films, check them out for some great old-movie entertainment (Pete Lorre always being an excellent Mr. Moto), and also enjoy the novels, four of which are collected in this reprint edition from 1983: “Your Turn, Mr. Moto”, “Think Fast, Mr. Moto”, “Mr. Moto Is So Sorry”, and “Right You are, Mr. Moto”.
“Your Turn, Mr. Moto”––GoodReads Synopses:
“A down-on-his luck American airman...a beautiful international adventuress...a mysterious Chinese courier...a scrap of paper worth many lives and the peace of the entire world...and a jigsaw pattern of treachery and sudden death that had been expertly designed to deceive and destroy. Enter the inimitable Mr. Moto, the only one who could hope to decipher and defuse the situation. Casey Lee, the airman, would never forget this extraordinary figure and the amazing feats he was capable of.”
“Think Fast, Mr. Moto”:
“Much more than a crooked roulette wheel is at stake at the Hitchings Plantation gambling house in Honolulu - and Japan's most clever, charming, and capable spy has arrived on the scene to protect the interests of his emperor. Wilson Hitchings, a solid young innocent, must make an ally of his renegade cousin, Eva of the violent eyes and flaming hair, if either is to survive their unwitting involvement in international intrigue. Without the help of Mr. Moto, they may still be lost…”
“Mr. Moto Is So Sorry”:
“Times were turbulent in the Orient. Japan, China and Russia were willing to go to any lengths to obtain their goals. The Japanese had their top Secret Agent, the super-polite, but super-deadly Mr. I.A. Moto, working night and day. Moto's prime objective was the safe delivery to Mongolia of a silver inlaid cigarette case...a very special case. To the uninformed it would appear to be a simple enough task, but you can be sure that whenever Mr. Moto is involved, nothing is what it seems.––“The ingredients of the usual international thriller are mixed with shrewd, grim humor here to make a good tale.”
“Right You are, Mr. Moto”:
“After serving his country as a paratrooper in World War II, Jack Rhyce takes on an even more dangerous mission when he becomes a secret agent in the early years of the Cold War. Now he and fellow spy Ruth Bogart have been dispatched to Tokyo to foil an assassination attempt on a leading liberal politician. Murder is only the first part of this nefarious Communist plot; the ultimate objective is to stir up anti-American sentiment in a country that has formed close bonds with its former adversary in the West. Undercover as do-gooders employed by the Asia Friendship League, Jack and Ruth are met at the airport by Mr. Moto, a would-be tour guide who offers to make their stay more hospitable. The American spies immediately suspect that there is more to Mr. Moto than meets the eye. But whose side is he on? To stop the cunning mastermind behind the sinister scheme, Jack and Ruth will have to learn the secrets of post-war Japan as quickly as possible. The mysterious Mr. Moto might just be their greatest ally, or their worst enemy. First serialized in the Saturday Evening Post, John P. Marquand’s popular and acclaimed Mr. Moto Novels were the inspiration for 8 films starring Peter Lorre.”
