Description: This is a 1990 very unusual redware brown colored and glazed figurine of a Ram or goat standing on all four legs. The ram has yellow color sponged decoration throughout its body. The ram also has long and curved yellow colored horns. It is standing erect on all four and looking forward. It also has some black highlights suggesting manganese glazing. The ram is standing on a flat platform with a pinched edge and hatched base. The piece shows some details such as the eyes, a mouth, and a short tail. The piece has nice glazing and coloring. This beautiful glazed redware figurine was made in the studios of  Lester Breininger. Please see photo to appreciate the beautiful design and colors. The bottom of the piece is marked as to the maker and the date the piece was made. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.

Date: 1990.

Origin: Robesonia, Berks County Pennsylvania.

Size: The ram is ~4 1/2" long and ~5" at its highest. The base measures ~4 1/4" by ~2 1/2". The piece weighs ~12.5 ounces.

Maker: Lester Breininger.

Marks: Marked "BRANINGER POTTERY ROBESONIA PA NOV 1990" on the bottom.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a very nice Breininger piece with a typical Pennsylvania Dutch shape, look, and colors made in the studios of a master potter with the Pennsylvania Dutch heritage. Needless to say Mr. Breininger has passed away in December 2011 and his pottery has become highly desirable.

Condition: The figurine is in very good condition with no cracks, no repairs, or hairlines. The piece has general crazing to the glaze which is difficult to see due to the coloring. The piece also has some of the normal defects you would expect in a piece of primitive pottery of this type such as spots where the glaze did not fully flow, pops, slubs, and surface roughness. Be that as it may, the piece is solid and intact and would make a great addition to your collection. Please see photos for additional condition  information.
