We have for your Consideration a RARE, Vintage 1950’s Bank of America San Jose ERMA Bank Collection bag! ERMA or Electronic Recording Machine Accounting was the first of its kind – totally changed banking operations from 1950 forward! This wonderful piece of history is made from suede, leather and canvas.  Hand printed on the front is Bank of America, San Jose ERMA #4643 S.F. Mail, 10 12 RT- P4 & P12 4/2 P – Under the flap is hand printed Collector Internal Revenue.  

History Note:  From 1950 to 1955 ERMA was a pioneering computer development project run at SRI International under contract to Bank of America in order to automate banking bookkeeping.  In the 50’s Bank of America was the largest bank in California and processed more checks than any other bank in the world.  The then well-known actor and future President of the United States, Ronald Reagan, hosted a transcontinental video conference to announce ERMA’s debut. The press conference showcased ERMA’s capabilities. It processed checks faster and more efficiently than ever before, approximately 33,000 accounts in the time it would take an average bookkeeper to do 245. It handled, read and sorted a wide variety of paper checks at high speed. It posted to accounts, identified stop payments and holds, flagged overdrafts, calculated service charges, stored account information, printed daily and monthly statements, and sorted 600 checks per minute. ERMA reduced the time required to process checks by 80 percent. It became one of the world’s first successful computers for business application.

What a RARE piece of History this bag is!  Owning this unique piece of history would be a fantastic conversation piece!  For the collector of Rare Historical Antiquities this is a fabulous find!

Vintage Condition – The entire bag shows it was used but well taken care of!  No rips, holes or snags.  The leather strap has come apart from the canvas but is still intact and weaves through the loops keeping the flap closed.  The bag has obvious smudges, stains and fraying leather. There are No Odors and No Mildew Smell.
