To Replace Bonsai Growing Medium:
  • Assemble all materials needed. Drainage, Growing Medium, Tools, Soaking Tub, Root Stimulants, etc.
  • Work in the shade continuously from start to finish.
  • Wash off old medium with a strong stream of water. Trim of 1/3 to 1/2 of the roots.
  • Don't let root dry out. Spray with water as needed.
  • Secure tree with at least 2 wires. Aluminum if it is balanced. Copper if it leans or cascades.
  • Add growing medium around roots and trunk, leaving no empty spaces.
  • Slowly submerge container in a tub of water up to the rim (Do not let water run over the rim). Allow water to enter through the holes in the bottom of the pot. Hold in the tub of water until the bobbles stop (15 - 30 minutes).
  • Remove the pot from the tub of water and cover the surface of the medium with a 3/8" to 1/2" deep layer of soaked, long-strand sphagnum moss, working in firmly with fingertips.
  • Move the plant to semi-shaded area for about 1 week. Spray water frequently on foliage, branches, and trunk.
  • Remove sphagnum in 4- 6 weeks when new rootlets start growing into it.
