This is an old vintage Peruvian Coin necklace with colorful ceramic pottery beads. There are five (5) brass coins with Llamas and Shields, dating from 1946 to 1965. There are two spacers representing suns with smiling faces. It has a leather braided strap and a metal fringe or tassels connected and hanging from the bottom coin. The necklace measures approximately 24 inches if it could be opened. The coin portion drop measures approximately 4 inches from the top coins to the bottom of the fringe. There is no clasp on the necklace and it goes over the head. This type of necklace is often referred to as “Un Sol De Oro” or “Sun of Gold”. This is probably from the late 1960s to early 1970s based upon the age of the coins used.
The coin denominations are as follows:
1946 Sol De Oro – bottom coin BANCO DEL PERU – PAGARA AL PORTADOR
1965 & 1965 – row above bottom coin – ½ Sol De Oro – Shield - Banco Central Reserva De Perv (back) Front CASADMONED CVATRICENTENARIO
½ Sol De Oro – Llamas – top row (2 of these)
This necklace is in nice vintage condition as you can see by the enlarged photographs. One of the tassels has a bend to it and all of the coins have some discoloration and age wear, especially the large bottom coin. I have not polished it as many people prefer the patina that only comes with age. I will leave any polishing up to you, but I think the patina adds to the charm of the necklace. Please look at the photos as they are part of the description and show the details better than I can describe.
This would be perfect for that Bohemian look. If you love the South American ethnic jewelry, this would look great with a sweater and a pair of jeans.
