Evolution Of Energy by S.T.U.N. Cd
"We all know "Annihilation of the Generations" is three minutes of punchy, pedal to the medal rock that utilizes early punk rock's trademark call and response vocals in the midst of metallic bombast, but the band throw several muscular songs onto this album.
Opener "Movement" sounds like Rage Against the Machine before it turns a corner at Jane's Addiction. One question: why not end with the same part that somes in with' we are just a moment away?' It's clearly the strongest point of the song. No matter, the song is still awesome. After "Here Comes the Underground" stutters at the start, it finishes with a scorching guitar line that is worth waiting for.
"Boredom" is the the best song on the album both musically and lyrically. Once it starts it won't stop, but you won't want it to. The lyrics embracing diversity are celebrated with anthemic music that is pure emotion over the course of its 3:21. The Wire cover is a pleasant diversion in the middle of the album and offers a glimpse of the band's ability to experiment.
"Watch the Rebellion Grow," mixes the Clash and Jane's Addiction, but the chorus sounds like something Blink-182 might have written (it doesn't take away from the song, however.) "The Future is Now" is just across the border from Rage-land during the verse, then shifts to a high-octane SoCal metal-punk that stops once to look at the sunset, similar to but better than Motley Cure's more anthemic moments.
The biggest drawback is closer "we Will Come to You," which wanders aimlessly for over five minutes and never provides any kind of chorus that is worth waiting for.
I also would have liked to hear a different guitar sound on some of these songs. Guitarist Neil Spies seems to have fallen in love with a straight-up distortion, where in some cases a dirtier sound or reverbed distortion would have been a nice stylistic change. And, the lyrics themselves are somewhat redundent while being delivered in the same manner by vocalist Chrsitiane song by song.
However these are small quips for a debut album and I give STUN the benefit of the doubt. After all, the music is what counts and STUN clearly have the chops, and after going through an album-making process once will help them work out the kinks next time. When you play music with such obvious emotion and passion that it is conveyed on CD, you're doing something right."
