Phyllostachys Nigra is renown for it's black culms. New culms emerge green but thoroughly fade to jet black culms within the first year or two. The combination of beautiful green leaves and black culms provide a stunning contrast in all four seasons. Black bamboo is probably the most popular ornamental bamboo in the world.

 

 

Rinse seeds in clean water for several minutes.

Soak seeds in a 10 percent salt water solution for 5 minutes. Remove the seeds and rinse them thoroughly.

Soak the bamboo seeds in clean water for 15 minutes.

Use a mix of peat moss and perlite (about 50 percent of each). Line a shallow container with the mixture.

Scatter seeds over the mixture. Planting in rows will help ensure each seed has enough room to grow.

Cover the seeds with soil mix. A light layer will be enough to protect the seedlings.

Place a cover on the container. A sealed container will keep the humidity high. Unseal it every few days to allow fresh air into the container and check the soil moisture. If it feels dry at any point, mist it thoroughly with water.

Transplant the bamboo seedlings after they are several inches high. It'll take about a month for the seeds to germinate and get to that height before they are ready to be potted.
