Description:  A quick-growing herb which though not native to the US, has naturalized throughout much of the country.   It was used throughout history since 400 B.C. as a medicinal herb, but today it is regarded as unsafe for consumption and used as an ornamental in shady areas and informal settings.  Plants form large clumps of dark green foliage.  The basal leaves are up to 8-inches in length, pointed hairy and ovate to lanceolate.  The upper leaves are considerably smaller.  Bloom color is highly variable in this species and the pendulous tubular flowers can occur in shades of pink, violet and white.  Their rapid growth habit also makes them ideal for use as biomass.  Plants can be cut back hard several times through the growing season and the material used for composting.

 

Uses:  Herb gardens; naturalizing in open shade, woodland borders, or cottage gardens; large containers; biomass for composting.  Plants should be placed deliberately as they are not easily removed due to their tuberous root system which will regrow to form new plants if a piece is broken off.  Do not place in vicinity of prized plantings as Comfrey is known to compete for space.   Will self-sow in ideal conditions; remove spent blooms to prevent unwanted spread.
