JMW Turner was commissioned by John Sheepshanks for a number of paintings. This beauty if fresh from a dealer in North Carolina who believed it was painted by Sheepshanks, who was not a painter. John Sheepshanks was a textile merchant who retired in England and began expanding his private art collection. Most of the Sheepshanks collection is in museums. We believe this to be one of the JMW Turner paintings commissioned by Sheepshanks, and signed by Turner on behalf of John Sheepshanks.
Setting and composition reflect typical Turner hallmarks as they relate to his preferred colors, subjects, settings, and clouds. Some images of Turner's other works and signatures are included in this listing for reference. Letter construction in the J. Sheepshanks signature is similar to Turner's.
There is some light edge wear, a few small repairs. The frame and stretcher appear to be originals, and the painting in the frame measures approximately 21" x 26."
