Struggle for Power, A Pictorial History, 1485-1689 by R. J. Unstead

Grade:  4-8

Summary:  This book covers the period between Henry VII's accession and James II's downfall. The great issue: the struggle for power between King and Parliament---should the country be ruled by an absolute monarch; an assembly of lords and country gentlemen, or by a King who observed laws and heeded th wishes of Parliament?

A civil war and the King's execution provided an answer that turned out to be little to the people's liking and, for a time, perhaps changed one tyranny for another. But, banishing another King in the process, they reached a compromise which developed into their system of government, whereby the King reigns and the Parliament rules.

History has to do with many things besides politics, and this period includes another struggle---theat between the Catholic and Protestant faiths. This, too, is covered as well as the Scottish and Irish affairs with England. Children will also look at everyday life, art, industry, and science and how all these things work together to create our "history."
