Opuntia is a genus in the cactus family, Cactaceae.
This variety of cactus can grow quite large here in Central Oklahoma. The seeds shown are from the actual seed pods shown. The plant I gathered seed from was about 12 feet tall.
The pads, larger wide than my head, are good to eat. Very Slimy.
Recent scientific study shows you can purify water with the slime of these pads.
The fruit pods are red and tastes like sour/sweet jelly.
