This is an intricately engraved vintage Mexican Sterling Silver Pin or Brooch, which is also equipped with a back loop if one wishes to wear it as a pendant. The pin has a safety clasp. It is clearly marked on the back Sterling Hecho En Mexico with the artists initials E.V.B., 925 and the Eagle Assay Mark with the number 113 inside the hallmark. The craftsmanship is exceptional and it was created with great ability and precision. This pin measures 2 1/4 inches in diameter and weighs just over 11 grams. There is some type of native symbol in a geometric design on the front and a criss-cross design behind it. The center is domed. The shape is a four pointed star with additional rectangular shapes that make it eight points. The engraving along the border consists of small intricate designs. This pattern is also in a circle around the center. The rectangular pieces have a diamond cut pattern.
According to The Little Book of Mexican Silver Trade and Hallmarks by Billie Hougart; "From 1948 to 1980, Mexican silversmiths used an Eagle Mark along with other markings, letters, names and logos." There are two listings in the book, one for EVB and the other E.V.B. Both are Sterling, Hecho En Mexico. The Eagle Mark referenced in the book has a 112 inside the hallmark. The scant information in the book regarding the artist was the only background on EVB I could find. There are several other pieces of jewelry that are listed on the Internet that have the Southwestern, Native American look to them that identify the artist as a Navajo who lived in Mexico.
Other than some very minor signs of age it is in excellent condition as you can see by the pictures. It would benefit from a nice polishing if you so desire. This is a fine example of Mexican silver artistry and would make a great addition to anyone's collection or a unique gift.
