"These marvelous tales come from the faraway Baltic countries of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, as well as from Finland. They are full of earthy humor as well as heroism and romance. They range from court to farmyard, from heaven to hell...These are among the most intriguing tales ever set down for children, because they do not end with simple morals or easy solutions. Each story creates a world of its own, one which you are unlikely to have encountered before, or ever to find again." This edition was published in Great Britain and printed in Czechoslovakia (where it was first published in 1981). It contains numerous color and black and white illustrations by Petr Sis -- this was one of his early books, and his stature as one of the great illustrators of children's books has since grown (check out the scans for some examples of his stunning full-page artwork). Oversized, 191 pages. The book is excellent, unmarked, with white pages, showing only a bit of external wear. Ditto for the jacket, which is protected in plastic. A fabulous illustrated children's book.
