For a protected bladder
The intestinal bacterium Escherichia coli (E. coli) is the most common pathogen of a urinary tract infection. These bacteria are a natural part of the intestinal flora. However, if they enter the bladder via the urethra, they can inflame the bladder mucosa. The typical symptoms occur, such as burning when urinating, painful cramps in the lower abdomen and a frequent urge to urinate, with only small amounts of urine being excreted. In rare cases, urinary stones can form during a urinary tract infection. Our bladder's natural protection against bacteria is slightly acidic urine. The pH value can become unbalanced due to diet, medication, lifestyle habits, stress, lack of sleep and illnesses such as urinary tract infections. If the pH value of the urine is in the alkaline range, bacteria can multiply unchecked. Methionine supports the body's own protective principle and aims for a urine pH value of less than pH 6. Bacterial growth can be inhibited. An antibiotic is often prescribed for a urinary tract infection. By shifting the pH value in the urine, the effect of an antibiotic, which requires an optimum effect in the acidic urine environment (pH 4-6) for therapeutic success, can be improved. METHIONIN AL helps to support the healing of urinary tract infections and can simultaneously improve the acid protection of the bladder.
Serves the acid protection of the bladder
Methionine is an essential amino acid and an important protein building block in our organism. The active ingredient methionine helps to acidify the urine. The urine-acidifying effect of methionine inhibits bacterial growth. Methionine can improve stone solubility and inhibit the formation of new stones in phosphate stones (struvite, carbonate apatite, brushite). The effect of some antibiotics can be improved by lowering the pH value in the urine. Antibiotics such as ampicillin, carbenicillin, nalidixic acid and nitrofurans are most effective in acidic urine (pH value 4 - 6). The pH value is shifted within the body's natural limits (pH 4.6 - 7.5).
RECOMMENDED USE:
METHIONIN AL 500 film-coated tablets are taken with plenty of liquid throughout the day (morning, midday and evening). The tablets can be taken regardless of meals. Unless otherwise prescribed by a doctor, the following dosages apply:
- Adults and adolescents aged 12 and over: 1 - 2 film-coated tablets of METHIONIN AL 500 3 times a day (corresponds to 0.5 - 1 g methionine 3 times a day)
Note: In special cases, the dosage can be increased to 10 g per day for patients who are not at risk of acidosis (overacidification of the blood). The therapeutic goal of treatment is a urine pH value of less than 6. The effect of methionine only occurs after 5 - 6 days. The duration of treatment depends solely on therapeutic necessity.
Know and avoid triggers
Stress, lack of sleep and an unhealthy diet weaken the human immune system and make it more susceptible to infections such as cystitis. Cold reduces blood flow to the mucous membranes, making them more vulnerable. Therefore, swimwear should be changed after swimming if possible. Sitting on cold surfaces should also be avoided. Excessive cleanliness in the genital area upsets the pH value and makes it easier for pathogens to penetrate.
Women are typical patients
One in five women between the ages of 20 and 54 complain of a urinary tract infection within a year. This is due to the relatively short urethra. Pathogens therefore find their way into the bladder more quickly. Hormonal fluctuations, sexual intercourse, smear infections and hormonal changes can also promote inflammation.
Diabetics are particularly susceptible
Diabetics are at risk for bladder infections. When blood sugar levels are high, the kidneys release glucose into the urine. Urine is naturally warm and, together with the glucose, is an ideal breeding ground for bacteria. Some diabetics suffer from bladder dysfunction. The bladder is not completely emptied and the permanent residual urine can also promote bladder infections.
Frequently asked questions and answers
Are there any known interactions with other medications?
In patients with Parkinson's disease, treatment with METHIONIN AL 500 can lead to a deterioration in the effectiveness of L-Dopa. An increased dosage should be avoided here. The effect of active ingredients such as penicillins, sulfonamides and nalidixic acid can be increased by METHIONIN AL 500.
Can METHIONIN AL 500 also be taken during pregnancy and breastfeeding?
There is insufficient data on the use of methionine during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should only be prescribed METHIONIN AL 500 after a doctor has carefully weighed up the benefits and risks.
What should you do if you forget to take METHIONIN AL 500?
If you forget to take the previous dose, you must not take a double dose. You should continue taking the medication as recommended.
