Rock-hard bones - you too?
Over 80% of Germans suffer from a vitamin D deficiency. This is mainly due to our life and work, which usually involves limited exposure to sunlight. We spend most of our day at work and in our free time indoors. However, vitamin D is mainly produced in our skin cells under the influence of sunlight and can only be absorbed to a small extent through food.
Vitamin K is one of the fat-soluble vitamins and can only be absorbed to a small extent through food. The formation of this vitamin, which is important for bone health, takes place primarily through the body's own production in the healthy intestinal flora. However, a disturbed intestinal flora can impair production.
Why do we need vitamin D and vitamin K?
While vitamin D promotes the absorption of calcium from the gastrointestinal tract into the blood and regulates calcium metabolism, vitamin K ensures that the calcium gets to where it is needed - the bones.
Vitamin K activates so-called messenger substances that ensure that the calcium is absorbed into the bones. Vitamin K and vitamin D are important partners for healthy bones, because without sufficient vitamin K, calcium utilization is impaired.
Vitamin K1 or vitamin K2?
Vitamin K1 and K2 are the most important representatives of the K vitamins. The "K" stands for coagulation, i.e. blood clotting.
Vitamin K1 is responsible for blood clotting, which means that the blood flow functions normally. If blood clotting is reduced, even small wounds can lead to heavy bleeding, while excessive blood clotting makes the blood thicker and more susceptible to clumping, i.e. blood clots.
Vitamin K2 also activates blood clotting, but also has a higher bioavailability and is therefore also referred to as the "more active" form of the two vitamin K variants.
Vitamin K2 is available in various forms. The "most active" form of vitamin K2 is all-trans menaquinone7, or MK7 for short. The body can use this particularly well and thus ensures optimal effectiveness.
