The story of the Spanish-American War and the revolt in the Philippines is a complex narrative where the United States, seeking to expand its influence in the Pacific, intervened in an ongoing Filipino rebellion against Spanish rule, ultimately leading to the US taking control of the Philippines after defeating the Spanish forces, only to then face a new war against the Filipino revolutionaries who desired full independence, resulting in a bloody conflict known as the Philippine-American War.

Key points:

Before the US involvement, Filipinos, led by figures like Andres Bonifacio and Emilio Aguinaldo, were already engaged in a long struggle against Spanish colonial rule, fighting for independence through the Katipunan revolutionary organization.

The sinking of the USS Maine in Havana harbor, Cuba, which was blamed on Spain, sparked public outcry in the US and pushed President McKinley to declare war against Spain.

A decisive naval victory for the US Navy against the Spanish fleet in Manila Bay, Philippines, effectively gave the US control over the archipelago.

Following the Spanish-American War, the Treaty of Paris forced Spain to cede the Philippines to the United States for a sum of money.

Despite promises of Filipino self-determination, the US decision to annex the Philippines ignited a new conflict with Filipino revolutionaries led by Aguinaldo, who viewed the US as just another colonial power.

The Filipino resistance employed guerrilla tactics against the larger American military, leading to a protracted and brutal war.

The US eventually subdued the Filipino rebellion, establishing colonial rule over the Philippines until their eventual independence after World War II.

Emilio Aguinaldo: Filipino revolutionary leader who fought against both Spanish and American forces.
Andres Bonifacio: Founder of the Katipunan, a key figure in the early stages of the Philippine Revolution.
William McKinley: US President during the Spanish-American War.
