MODEL 1858 CIVIL WAR, MOUNTED RIFLEMAN, HAT INSIGNIA, ORIGINAL
This is a mounted rifleman’s cap insignia for use by enlisted men in the years before the Civil War and into the War's early years. This die-stamped brass insignia measures approximately 3 ½ inches in height by 1 ½ inches in width. This insignia features two retention loops on the reverse tubing and no tassels along the horn. You’ll notice that the horn is ornamented as well, making this insignia stand-out from the others of the same pattern. This insignia retains nearly all its original gold gilt finish, displays wonderful patina and is constructed of stamped brass with oxidized lead solder affixing a pair of brass wires for attaching to hats. Mounts to the hat vertically as pictured. This is a fine example of a Civil War insignia which is seldom seen.
The trumpet was issued by the Army to enlisted men in 1858. Mounts vertically on the cap as shown.
