FRONT COVER "HIGH NOON--NAVAJO FALLS" BY RAY MANLEY. Navajo Falls, shown here, is one of the scenic jewels in Havasu Canyon. The photographer says: "The falls flow north and slightly to the east. My advice is to bracket exposures because the brightness of the water and the darkness of shadows make exposure calculation quite exacting." "Havasu" is an Indian word from Naha," water" and vasu," blue," hence, "blue water.".

OPPOSITE PAGE "A SUMMER DAY IN HAVASU CANYON" BY DWIGHT PERRY. The photographer writes: "From U.S. 66, about nine miles east of Peach Springs, Arizona, a dirt road runs north sixty-two miles to Hualapai Hilltop, where an eight-mile trail goes down a scenic canyon to Havasu Creek and the Indian village of Supai. About a half mile below Supai, on beautiful Havasu Creek I got this picture of the most photogenic stream I've ever visited. A short distance below are Havasu and Mooney Falls." 4x5 Speed Graphic camera; Ektachrome Daylight; f.22 at I / 5 oth sec.; Kodak Ektar F4.5 12 5mm lens; June; full sun; meter reading 400; ASA rating 64. PRINTED IN ARIZONA, U. S. A.

THIS ISSUE: This issue is a milestone in the story of this publication. The story is briefly told in the line at the bottom of this page : Printed in Arizona, U.S.A. The story really begins in 1950 when W. A. Krueger Co. of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was awarded the contract, by competitive bid, to produce the color pages for ARIZONA HIGHWAYS. Now, some seventy-five million magazines and some six billion color reproductions later, we have no cause to regret our association with this fine firm. We feel month after month and year after year we have been receiving some of the finest color work produced in this country. The number of awards our magazine has won in national graphic arts competition eloquently testify to that statement. Apparently the W. A. Krueger Co. officials have been reading our magazine and were captured by its siren's lure, because they became deeply interested in Arizona and Arizona's future. So much so, in fact, they purchased control of the Tyler Printing Company, a long-established Phoenix printing firm, and brought big-league printing to Phoenix. Result: a handsome new building and some of the finest printing equipment manufactured in America today. Added result: this publication ( previously printed out of the state, color in Milwaukee, black and white pages in Los Angeles) has come home to stay and, we feel, it will be bigger and more colorful than ever before. In our first Printed in Arizona, U.S.A. issue, and to celebrate what we believe to be an important event for us and our state, we take you to one of our most scenic and interesting areas: Havasu Canyon. We hope you enjoy our Havasu Adventure ... R.C.
