A compass typically consists of a magnetized needle that pivots freely on a pin. The needle aligns itself with the Earth's magnetic field, pointing north. The compass card, a circular dial with the cardinal directions (north, east, south, and west) marked on it, rotates with the needle.

To use a compass, hold it level in your hand and let the needle spin freely. The north end of the needle will point to magnetic north. You can then use the compass card to determine the direction you are facing.
