the Newsday archives on their web site. I grew up on LI, and some of its history was taught in school or was common knowledge / urban legends. "The Story of the Smithtown Bull" is one of the best local legends in the country. And, yes George Washington did stop in Smithtown (the building still stands today) and later that day slept at an inn in Setauket.
This book has something for everyone - history buffs, people interested in geology, urban planners (think Robert Moses here), auto racing (Motor
Parkway), Native American history, colonial history, sea faring history
and even witch trial history/haunted houses. There is a page dedicated
