Agate is a variety of silica, characterised by its fineness of grain and brightness of colour. Agate is one of the most common materials used in the art of hardstone carving and are used to make ornaments such as pins, brooches or other types of jewellery, Most agates occur as nodules in volcanic rocks or ancient lavas.
Agate naturally forms in many different but faint colours. Due to its porous nature it is often artificially dyed to enhance its natural colour.
This Agate Slice is 'Dyed'. Diamond saws are used to cut the Agate into slices which are then ground to remove any imperfections, then polished and dyed to help enhance and display the beautiful natural banding within.
