Crash effort for a safer cigarette by Bill Davidson:
January 11, 1964, was the day the bomb dropped on the tobacco Industry. Since the release of the surgeon general's report on smoking and health, public reaction has been essentially one of fear -- and cigarette sales have dropped as much as 30 percent in some areas of the country. Editor-at-large Bill Davidson, who spent six weeks surveying the effects of this report on the industry, found that nearly all cigarette plants have cut their operations to three or four days a week, leaving their workers With pay cuts ranging up to 40 percent. More significantly. he found the industry's leaders less disposed tO quarrel with the medical evidence linking their product with lung cancer. Instead, he says, they are pinning their hopes now on an intensified search for a safer cigarette.

Lapham, who acquired a virus infection only days after completing his research on prearranged sensations, found himself avoiding the telephone calls of even his closest friends. "They'd start off," he says, "with something like 'How do you feel?' and I'd just hang up.". . . Maxine Cheshire. a reporter for the Washington Post, covered the 1960 Senate campaign of Margaret Chase Smith. In preparing his sea saga, William Willis worked with an old friend, John Hunt, the Post's chief of copy. who also lent an editorial hand 10 years ago when Mr. Willis was producing a series of articles about his first Pacific raft voyage. . . . Joe Hyams, who spent several weeks in London interviewing lovely actress Elke Sommer, is a real veteran of the motion-picture world. He is currently assisting with the autobiography of British comedian Peter Sellers.. - . William Saroyan, whose first book of short stories was written at the rate of a story a day for 26 days, will mark the anniversary of that achievement this fall with another volume. Called After 30 Years: The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze, it includes 37 stories written at the same pace only a few months ago . . . . Contributing writer Robert K. Massie flew to East Africa for his penestrating eyewitness account of the explosive situation in Kenya, Uganda, Tanganyika and Zanzibar.
