U.S. ARMY, ROUND SUBSTITUTE STANDARD MEAT CAN, MESS KIT

During the Spanish American War the Ordnance department purchased substitute items for issue. This is an example of substitute items that were purchased. Two batteries of the 3^rd U.S. Artillery at the Presidio of San Francisco received these round meat cans. These were also used in recruit mess halls at the beginning of WWI.
