Ancient Roman Silver Coin Cistophorus of Trajan
|
TRAJAN
98-117 AD
Silver Cistophoric Tetradrachm "Cistophorus". 9.78 g. 26mm. Rome mint for the east. Struck January-February AD 98.
Struck First Month! of Trajan's Reign ~ on January 27 or 28, Nerva died, and Trajan was accepted as emperor by both the armies and the Senate.
Obverse: IMP CAES NERVA TRAIAN-AVG GERM P M TR P P P, laureate head of Trajan right.
Reverse: Aquila (legionary eagle standard) between two legionary standards, left one surmounted by hand and the right by banner.
Ref. RIC 718; RSC 607; BMCRE 708. Rare. Good Fine obv./near Fine rev.
Noteworthy for the portrait, which bears a striking likeness to Domitian as was struck in his first regnal year before engravers were familiar with Trajan's likeness.
While no decisive evidence exists for the location of the mint of the
cistophori during the reigns of Vespasian through Trajan, the style,
legends, and, in particular, the consistent die axis point to Rome,
suggesting that these coins were minted in the capital--rather than Ephesus--and then sent to the East for local use.
