COVER: Where Do They Go From Here? The Palestinians. Cover: Photo by Fadi Mitri.
TOP OF THE WEEK:
BEIRUT'S AGONY AND THE PALESTINIANS' FATE: At times, West Beirut simply disappeared in the smoke of its own devastation. Israel's siege forces saturated the city with bombs and shells while tanks and infantry tightened the garrote around 6,000 Palestinian guerrillas. Among the civilian wounded: NEWSWEEK photographer Shlomo Arad (photo). The diplomats edged closer to a deal for the PLO's withdrawal from Lebanon. In separate stories, NEWSWEEK'S cover package reports the agony of Beirut and the plight and hopes of the Palestin-ians--not only the 300,000 trapped in the rubble of Beirut but the 4.4 million in the Palqstinian diaspora throughout the Mid-east1and as far away as Detroit. A separate piece examines the Reagan administration's forthcoming effort to forge an overall Mideast settlement. In a signed article, West Bank journalist Jamil Hamad offers hope that Palestinians and Israelis can dispel old antagonisms and learn to live together in peace.
AMERICA'S NEW HOBOS: There's a new breed of hobo riding the U.S. rails. Thousands of unemployed Americans are hopping the boxcars in search of jobs. Hard-core hobos view the tyros with amusement and some anger: the new crowds have brought more violence to trainyards and "jungles," and the "yard bulls" who police the tracks are cracking down on everyone. NEWSWEEK national correspondent Martin Kasindorf and staff photographer Lester Sloan joined the new hobos for a taste of their grueling and dangerous life.
BETTER THAN X-RAYS: To explore a patient's insides, doctors used to have essentially two choices: X-rays or surgery. Now stunning advances in diagnostic imaging provide excellent interior pictures, shedding light on diseases from cancer to mental illness.
THIEF OF OAKLAND: Oakland A's outfielder Rickey Henderson strolls to the batter's box, draws a walk and then starts running: he should soon outstrip Lou Brock's season record for stolen bases-- headfirst.
